would he use words like this? i think it's the way he thinks unless he's being scripted. 47% was unscripted. this is unscripted. this could be the pure romney. >> i was the first guy in the media to see the 47% remark. when i saw it i couldn't believe it, but i thought maybe there was a slight chance that maybe he was saying it to play up to the that crowd. he knew that's what they wanted to hear. but now when we hear how he talks about voters, he didn't just say yes they were bought off, that obama won the their votes through bribery. he said i ran a campaign ever big ideas, but these other people out there, they don't care about it. they're just in it for themselves, so they are the moochers, they are victim who are looking at who will pay them the most. in the end what happens mitt romney portrays himself as a victim of the victims. it just confirms all the worst impressions from the 47% rant, and now you have republicans running away from him and basically saying, hey, don't let the elevator door hit you on the way out. >> i mentioned before john, who i usually agree wit

honestly disagreed with his recollection of what he told us on september 14th. >> not his recollection here. will this just raise more questions? >> i think for republicans it will. i do get a sense there is fishing for a scandal here on the part of republican members of congress. they had been doing that before the election and i think it hasn't stopped since. i think what we know is that there was a straight forward difference between the cia's initial assessment of what happened on september 11 in benghazi and what they later revised that assessment to be. i don't think there is a scandal there. i think you had the cia giving its best initial assessment to dr. susan rice who then gave that assessment to the public on behalf of the white house and then the assessment changed on the part of the cia. i'm not sure what the scandal is but i've heard words like watergate being thrown around which i think goes a step too far and is too political. >> cameras did not catch petraeus arriving this morning even though there were reporters staking out every possible entrance and all we saw was a blac

fletcher is live for us in tel aviv with the very latest. martin, what's the latest? >> reporter: lynn, good morning. following up on netanyahu's threat, last night they are stressing they will do anything it takes to stop the palestinians from firing rockets into israel. overnight or last night rather 30,000 reserves were given a potential order to report for duty. overnight 16,000 soldiers were told, reserve soldiers were told to report to their units. they're going to join army units amassed on the border of gaza. tank transporters and personnel carriers, thousands of troops going towards the border with gaza ready for a ground invasion. as you suggested in your introduction, lynn, is it a show of force or is it the real thing? we don't know at this point. it's definitely partly a show of force but it could also equally well end in a ground invasion because israelis keep insisting whatever it takes they'll do in order to stop the rockets being fired from gaza. now, there was a temporary cease-fire in place this morning. israel agreed that while the egyptian prime minister was visiti

of spending from the u.s. economy by raising taxes and cutting government spending at the same time. that's more than 2% of gdp, and the economy is only growing at 2%. it's an absurd thing to try to do. more than that, though, i want you to recognize that the kind of deal that they seem to be cooking up in the clouds, namely cutting taxes -- raising taxes by 150 billion and boehner getting his way, cutting spending by $150 billion, that's $300 billion, that's a lot of negative stimulus also. it might not be 500 but 300 is a locality. >> i think steve said something about a gradual slope ned of a cliff. the cataclysmic that he was talking about. initially those kinds of tax increases don't kick in until much later. they're now talking about pushing back spend cuts as well. look, peter is right. we're looking at fiscal contraction next year, and it gets back to the first set of comments. that's not what you want to see about an economy growing around 2% with a highly elevated employment rate. let's not forget about the jobs part of this, and also let's not forget that temporary spending on

in a show of support for hamas. nbc's martin fletcher has been following the latest and he joins us live from tel aviv. martin. >> reporter: good morning, brian. well, did hamas get the message that the israeli prime minister was talking about? apparently not. they fired rockets towards tel aviv always mentioned. a game changer for israel if those rockets had actually landed and done damage in tel aviv. they didn't. two landed short and exploded harmlessly in feels and one landed harmlessly in the sea but more important for the symbolism than the effect. israel's main goal apart from eliminating the militant islamic leadership of hamas has been to destroy their rocket capability aiming most of rare raids, more than 450 in the last couple of days, at destroying the long-range rocket capability of hamas so the fact that they were able to launch three rockets which failed just short of tel aviv. well, that says something that israel needs to as netanyahu said expand its operations if it wants to destroy that capability. so ground war is the option. but the sirens in tel aviv were frightenin
